Age of Discovery

“In truth, should I meet with gold or spices in great quantity, I shall remain till I collect as much as possible, and for this purpose I am proceeding solely in quest of them.”
Christopher Columbus

The golden Age of Discovery has long been considered an intriguing period of history – marking the time in which extensive overseas exploration emerged as a powerful factor in European culture and globalization. It was a time of dangerous sea-bound voyages, where men would leave the comfort of home to embark on great adventures in an attempt to quench their thirst to discover new worlds and the treasures they held.

For King And Country jewellery collection draws inspiration from this swashbuckling age. It explores the motivation behind the thirst for travel, the desire to conquer and accumulate wealth and power, as well as man’s fascination of the unknown and sense of adventure.

Our sixth fine jewellery collection has an elegant and monochromatic aesthetic, purposefully antiquated in look to be in-keeping with the theme and period of history from which it originates. Nautical instruments – such as the compass and sextet – can be seen alongside symbols of the northern star and lunar cycle, essential landmarks of navigating at the time.

Unsurprisingly, black and white south sea pearls feature heavily, marking a first for the brand. They use of this gemstone is of course a nod to the quest for bounty and the respective trade routes established during the Age of Discovery, of which pearls were much sought after. Many of the pearls in the collection are diamond-capped to symbolise the twinkling stars in the night sky, again tools of navigation for adventuring seamen.

Notable pieces include the Voyager Necklace and matching Voyager Earrings, both heavy-set with pearls and diamonds. A favourite is also the Antarctica Ring, a cocktail ring in carved crystal and gold with pave-set diamond detail (also one-of-a-kind).

A final mention goes to the kinetic Explorer Pendant which features a spinning gemstone globe  in either rhyolite or lapis lazuli (the green rhyolite representing the land and the blue lapis representing the sea). The owner of the pendant can choose to have a diamond set into a chosen country on the globe that means something special to them, such as a birthplace, favourite holiday destination or to mark the cities which they have lived.
