No Smoke Without Flowers

No Smoke Without Flowers is inspired by the 19th Century Chinese opium dens known as Hua-yan jians – or flower-smoke rooms – where the smoke was the intoxicating opium and the flowers the female courtesans.

The courtesans, chosen for their beauty and talent, were often bestowed gifts of fine jewellery by their long-standing admirers and clients. This collection of richly hued jewels imagines the contents of a jewellery box belonging to a successful courtesan through the modern lens of contemporary jewellery design.
