Creating kooky yet wearable designs is one of our favourite pastimes. The world of fine jewellery can be overly serious, so we prefer to deliver fun wherever possible. Our one-of-a-kind Riviera Earrings are certainly fun – it’s not every day that you find a pair of miniature, plastic fish decorating your ear lobes.
Handcrafted in 18ct yellow gold and brass, this charming piece is perfect for those who like to stand out from the crowd. The design itself is inspired by mid-century American culture with its use of use of salmon and coral pinks, 1950s antique wallpaper, vintage sewing pins and the sweetheart motif.
The various plastic elements are also extremely indicative of this time. Mid-century America saw a boom in plastic production after the as home industries battled to meet an ever-expanding demand for customer goods. Plastic became one of the most popular materials to work with in all sectors, including jewellery, as it was novel and free from pre-conceptions regarding its use. In short, plastic was cool. The Riviera earrings feature both found plastic objects (the fish) and resin to create the final design, which is meant to represent in its totality a fish bowl vignette – or a slice of Americana life at that time.
The Riviera Earrings have been showcased online by such editors as Melanie Grant of The Economist.
